When we build a new custom outdoor living space for a client, we understand that we’re creating something that’s much more than the sum of its parts. A covered patio is a place where memories are made, where families and friends gather, and where you can truly rest and recover from daily life. “My new backyard space has, and this is not an exaggeration, changed my life for the better,” Ryan told us.

Why Build a Custom Covered Patio?

In late 2020, our customers Ryan and Amanda reached out to get an estimate four an outdoor space makeover from us. They were one of the thousands of couples that had been cooped up during the COVID-19 pandemic, and decided if that ever happened again they needed a backyard oasis complete with a patio cover. Ryan put it this way, “My wife and I both had ‘out of the house’ jobs. I did a ton of networking and she worked in a school, so when we suddenly had to be home every day, we ran out of things to do pretty quickly.”

Curating Backyard Dreams

Their home in west Fort Worth had a small, basic patio, and a featureless, grass backyard. They came to us with an outdoor living project in mind and a landscape plan / patio design that had already been drawn up by another contractor. “What I noticed right away was that they were about to pay too much for something they weren’t going to like, and they didn’t see that yet,” said Jerrimy Farris, owner of Texas Direct Roofing & Construction. Their plan included flagstone paver floors, something the other contractor insisted was a necessity. “I explained that they have aesthetic appeal but are terrible from a maintenance standpoint; the flagstone wouldn’t be great for their daughter, who wanted to ride her tricycle and color it with chalk,” said Jerrimy.

Our team presented a new vision for their outdoor patio, one that was based on the things they told us were important. For example, Ryan wanted an outdoor fireplace, but after we learned he wanted it for the heat in the winter, we recommended Infratech infrared heaters instead. This solution ended up being less expensive than a fireplace and would beat the winter weather conditions by providing much more heat than a gas or wood outdoor fireplace could ever hope to achieve.

Ryan, in particular, had trouble embracing the new vision. “Honestly, I struggle to even read floor plans. My wife loves that stuff, so when she and Jerrimy started discussing the patio changes at full speed, I got lost,” he told us. We don’t expect every client to keep up with construction lingo. For Ryan’s benefit, we had someone draft 3D renderings of the space, at no cost to them. According to Jerrimy, “Some people just need to see things another way, and that’s okay. Our goal is to make sure someone falls in love with the idea of their new space before they ever see it, so of course, we’re going to do everything we can to help them picture it.”

Building a Texas Custom Patio

Having fallen in love with the space, construction began in January of 2021. Ryan told us, “Every step was exciting to watch. We actually experienced a delay because of the crazy ice storm that winter, which created even more anticipation around it being finished.” Within a couple of months, construction was completed, and Ryan and Amanda began to use their new space. “One funny story I tell people,” Amanda recalled, “was when my husband had to live on the patio. He got a really bad case of COVID in 2021, and he didn’t want me or my daughter to catch it, so he spent all day outside on our sofa.”
